Election or Erection? Whats in a word?

ELECTION had always been challenging for politicians across the world. In India, ELECTIONS have been even harder.

Why?

Indian politician face demands of world’s largest ELECTION exercise. ELECTION needs high muscle and money power.

It is difficult to successfully manage ELECTION consecutive times as public is not satisfied with Politicians of any party. Media has termed this as anti incumbency factor.

Public says politicians come only for ELECTIONS to us and then they forget. Politicians say that they don’t forget but it is very difficult to satisfy public.

The biggest threat to politicians is mid term ELECTIONS. Politicians don’t want frequent ELECTIONS as it drains all their resources. Politicians switch loyalties to avoid frequent ELECTIONS.

Frequent ELECTIONS are not good for Economy too. Who knows it better than Economist turned Prime Minister MMS? But MMS say ELECTION is responsibility of Madam. He is only responsible for delivery after successful ELECTION.

With this clear roles and responsibilities, no wonder Congress has mastered art of ELECTION since last 60 years.

But times are changing now and even Congress in facing heat. Now ELECTIONS have become Hi Tech and machines are used. Earlier hand and paper were enough.

To ensure free and fair ELECTIONS we have ELECTION commission. But even ELECTION commission can not stop corruption. Origin of corruption is money spent on ELECTIONS. Businessman gives money to political parties for ELECTIONS and in return they expect favors. Experts say to stop corruption we need state funding of ELECTIONS.

The profile of electorate is changing. Now politicians need to woo more women and young population for their ELECTION. Now parties are fielding young candidates as they can do the manage ELECTION better.

If you think only Indian politicians go extra length for ELECTIONS, think about Obama, who at perfect time ordered to kill Osama and secure his ELECTION.

Now change ELECTION with ERECTION and it becomes hilarious!

A Business Fiction book - "Who is that lady?"

The book is about an idea that is converted into a billion dollar business, about a belief that an idea can be implemented and about formulating right strategy for converting an idea into a business. The plot harmoniously weaves around complex business fundamentals, required to set up, run and make a business successful, presented in lucid, easy to understand style. The novel is about implementation, about challenges that can be overcome, about success, about friendship, about passion, and about fun above all! All in all a hilarious and inspiring story on entrepreneurship and idea possibilities!

The book has got good and encouraging reviews from readers so far.

Dr. T. R. Madanmohan ( Ex Associate Professor IIM Bangalore ) says, “Reading ‘Who is that lady?’ brought vividly the moments of celebration and anguish of "identification of business opportunity", validation and construction of business model and implementation. A wonderful, written as a novel, that should be read by all current and future business leaders. Wish the book was available around 2005 for my class of Managing Technology led business at IIM Bangalore. I am sure the class would have devoured and gained much more from the book.”

Sathish Sheshadri ( Management Consultant at IBM) says, “India is renowned for using stories to convey great life lessons. Who is that Lady could well become such a legendary story on the topic of innovation and entrepreneurship. Everyone from students to CEOs will find a lot to reflect on, from the pearls of wisdom that the authors have shared through the protagonist, Pratik.”

Major Pooja Gupta says, “The book makes you think... if there is anything in this world which is impossible.”

Subir Dhar (Principal Consultant at Infosys) says, “This book will inspire India’s restless youth to take up entrepreneurship.”

Neerav Nimesh (Entrepreneur) says, “An entertaining book, which is not only a good novel but also a very good book on management. The author has been able to explain the fundamentals of every aspect of business whether marketing, planning, strategy, organizational structure, H.R., lines of communication, team work, goal setting etc and has done so without appearing to dispense "gyan".

I wrote few months back about retail mobile van for access, convenience and shoping experience to customers (Idea No. 26)

Batelco , leading telecom operator in Bahrain has implemented this concept recently

“The new shop on wheels has a full range of Batelco’s products and services onboard. A selection of mobile handsets will also be available from the shop. Additionally, customers can buy SimSim call credit, pay their bills and complete any Batelco transaction conveniently at the mobile van.The van boasts comfortable seating in elegant surroundings and additionally features built-in air conditioning and a DVD system.”

Manmohan Singh, Corruption and Gandhian Approach

A political satire… A fictional conversation between the two BIG Indian Congress Leaders… Well how it might have gone !!

When Sonia Gandhi appointed Manmohan Singh as PM of India , I guess she might have asked him to follow Gandhian Approach. Manmohan as always must have agreed and said YES MADAME !

After string of scams and embarrassment, Sonia Gandhi called Manmohan Singh and asked, “What have you done? Didn’t I ask you to follow Gandhian approach ?”

Manmohan Singh replies humbly: I only followed Gandhian approach Madame?

Sonia Gandhi gets angry: There are so many scams and you are saying that you followed Gandhian approach????

Manmohan Singh: I am saying truth Madame. I only followed Gandhian approach.

Sonia Gandhi gets impatient: How you followed Gandhian approach? Can you please explain that?

Manmohan replies: Gandhian approach says, wise man should be like 3 wise monkeys. “See No Evil, Hear No Evil and Speak no Evil

Sonia Gandhi is listening.

Manmohan continues:
When Raja was doing all wrong thing in Telecom, I saw no evil.
When people were saying wrong things about Thomas, I heard no evil and appointed him as CVC.
When I knew about ISRO Devas spectrum deal, I spoke no evil and hence deal was not scrapped.

Manmohan Singh asks in amazement: Where did I go wrong? Madame!
Sonia Gandhi gets frustrated and curses her self: Its not you but GANDHIS have gone wrong !

Why Patni iGate merger might not work?

What are strategic rationale of Patni iGate merger?

There are two broad categories of strategic rationales for IT/BPO companies’ mergers and acquisitions . These categories are Economics of Credentials and Economics of Relationship

http://pareekhjain.blogspot.com/2007/06/strategic-rationale-for-m-in-it-bpo.html

In Patni iGate merger the predominant rationale as discussed in media is Economics of Credential. This merger will develop credentials of combined entity as a billion dollar company and there is hope that this billion dollar credential will lead to automatic entry of combined entity into big league of IT outsourcing deals.

Not necessary…

I see flaw in this reasoning. In sourcing process for large outsourcing deals final RFP stage is narrowed down to 5 -6 vendors. Even if client has decided for India based outsourcing vendor, advisors recommend to have at least one Global Vendor like IBM, Accenture or Cap Gemini in the final list. Also advisors recommend to have at least one niche player in the final RFP stage. That leaves for around 4 large outsourcing companies to participate and fight in RFP stage.

Will one billion dollar revenue be enough to qualify in top 4 vendors in India? Not necessary…

iGate Patni combines stands at Number 8 in India after TCS, Infosys, Wipro, Cognizant, HCL, Mahindra, Mphasis ( In order of Revenue)

This 8th position in billion dollar club is not necessary a huge advantage in large deals if the entry criteria is top 4 or 5.

One billion dollar psychological mark became entry criteria when only 4 or 5 firms were over billion dollar. If 8 or 10 firms cross billion dollar mark then next cut off will be Five Billion Dollar Revenue ( TCS and Infosys have already crossed $5 Billion and Wipro and Cognizant might cross next year. HCL is already advertising it self $5.5 billion company in TV advertisements though its IT services revenues are in range of $ 3 billion)

Other rationale I came across is that old clients will stay and combined entity will pursue new clients for big deals.

Not necessary…

Why does a fortune 500 client some times prefer a small firm for some work when it can very well afford a large firm. I have been in shoes of business users and answer is service, flexibility and management attention. For a small company a big client becomes a marquee client and this marquee client is treated and serviced very well.

For the above reason, small companies always create niche for themselves and survive in any service industry. Now if two small companies merge and become a billion dollar firm then some of the old clients might re evaluate their decision to continue with the new billion dollar firm. The clients might move to other smaller firms like Mindtree, Hexaware, Zensar, L&T Infotech )

What could work?

If combined iGate Patni entity, instead of focusing on new customers, follow the strategy of increasing share of wallet of existing customers then this might work. Combined entity has developed other credentials also i.e. new service lines and new geographies There are very few common clients between iGate and Patni and if combined entity tries to increase work from existing clients using combined credentials of additional service line and geographical coverage then this might work.

Bigger is better and small is beautiful. But what would you say for two small firms who have combined and in the process neither became big nor remained small. They are just right for Amul Chocolates! ( Celebrate whatever the case !)

Indian Companies Outsourcing to Pakistan? Lessons from Israel and Palestine

Should Indian Companies Outsource to Pakistan?

Idea looks non starter.
If a news story tells you that few Israelis companies are outsourcing to Palestine then idea of an Indian company outsourcing to Pakistan doesnt look that weird

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/ml_israel_palestinians_high_tech

Quoting from above news item, " Israeli CEOs say it's their way of bringing a little bit of peace to their troubled corner of the world. But the real reason they're hiring Palestinians, they acknowledge, is because it simply makes good business sense."

Same remain true for Indian and Pakistan. Apart from similarities in country name initials ( Israel and India starts from I , Palestine and Pakistan starts from P), the painful history and current border dispute is also comparable.

If outsourcing can establish little peace in Israel and Palestine, it can establish little peace in India and Pakistan as well.

And it makes business sense as well . Here's why?

Firstly, Indian IT companies are seeing employee cost escalation in big cities. Companies counter move is to relocate some of their operations in Tier II cities in India where cost and employee attrition is low. Utilizing Pakistan can also be one such counter move to reduce cost and attrition.

Secondly, Indian companies are desperately looking for new growth avenues. Initial business dependence was on US and later focus shifted to Europe. Now when US and European markets are saturating growth will be from new geographies. Utilizing Pakistan even symbolically will help Indian companies geting business from MENA ( Middle East and North Asia ) Region.

Well there are hundred reasons from security to economics for not to consider this route. Still there are few resons to consider it as well. Thoughts to ponder !
