Telecom Companies Plan Renewable Energy Outsourcing in India

Two years back in 2010,  I wrote about need for new business model - Renewable Energy Outsourcing for Telecom Companies.

http://pareekhjain.blogspot.in/2010/10/renewable-energy-outsourcing-what-next.html

My rational was that there is clear business case for Renewable Energy usage in Telecom Companies in India and other emerging countries but Telecom Companies don't have expertise in Renewable Energy Operations.

So there was need of new business model - Renewable Energy Outsourcing, where specialist companies setup Renewable Energy Operations and provide power to Telecom companies on kwh basis.

Glad to see that two years later in 2012, TAIPA ( Tower And Infrastructure Provider Association) in India floated RFP for a pilot project for RESCO for 500 Telecom Sites.

http://taipa.in/content/taipa-resco-rfp-revised-technical-bid-document

RESCO  stands for Renewable Energy Service Company

If concept is successful, there is need for Renewable Energy at 100,000 sites in India ( approximately 20% of Telecom Sites in India)

The concept is interesting. Hope it is successful and Renewable Energy Outsourcing becomes next big thing in outsourcing in India and Globally.

A Business Fiction book - "Who is that lady?"

The book is about an idea that is converted into a billion dollar business, about a belief that an idea can be implemented and about formulating right strategy for converting an idea into a business. The plot harmoniously weaves around complex business fundamentals, required to set up, run and make a business successful, presented in lucid, easy to understand style. The novel is about implementation, about challenges that can be overcome, about success, about friendship, about passion, and about fun above all! All in all a hilarious and inspiring story on entrepreneurship and idea possibilities!

The book has got good and encouraging reviews from readers so far.

Dr. T. R. Madanmohan ( Ex Associate Professor IIM Bangalore ) says, “Reading ‘Who is that lady?’ brought vividly the moments of celebration and anguish of "identification of business opportunity", validation and construction of business model and implementation. A wonderful, written as a novel, that should be read by all current and future business leaders. Wish the book was available around 2005 for my class of Managing Technology led business at IIM Bangalore. I am sure the class would have devoured and gained much more from the book.”

Sathish Sheshadri ( Management Consultant at IBM) says, “India is renowned for using stories to convey great life lessons. Who is that Lady could well become such a legendary story on the topic of innovation and entrepreneurship. Everyone from students to CEOs will find a lot to reflect on, from the pearls of wisdom that the authors have shared through the protagonist, Pratik.”

Major Pooja Gupta says, “The book makes you think... if there is anything in this world which is impossible.”

Subir Dhar (Principal Consultant at Infosys) says, “This book will inspire India’s restless youth to take up entrepreneurship.”

Neerav Nimesh (Entrepreneur) says, “An entertaining book, which is not only a good novel but also a very good book on management. The author has been able to explain the fundamentals of every aspect of business whether marketing, planning, strategy, organizational structure, H.R., lines of communication, team work, goal setting etc and has done so without appearing to dispense "gyan".

Why rising fuel cost is good for India’s outsourcing business?

Fact:- Increase in fuel cost is making the global transportation costly.

Hypothesis:- Rise in global transportation cost combined with wage rise in China will make sourcing from china costly.

Implication:- Manufacturing outsourcing will reverse and manufacturing will shift back to US and European countries in coming years.

Evidence:- Signs are visible now as many Chinese manufacturers are scouting for land deals in US cities for manufacturing sites.

This rising fuel cost will impact manufacturing outsourcing as manufacturing outsourcing requires physical transportation of goods. It will not impact services outsourcing ( IT and BPO).

Possibility:- On the contrary, with reverse in manufacturing outsourcing the employment situation will improve in western countries and there will be less public pressure to stop services outsourcing, which will be good reprieve for India’s outsourcing business.

So rising fuel cost can be actually good for India’s outsourcing business provided India keep check on rising wages of IT and BPO manpower!

Why Microsoft develops lousy products?

Microsoft is a successful company by any standard one may want to judge, but often users are not found satisfied by quality of Microsoft products.

Why the quality of Microsoft's products is not to users satisfaction compared to quality of product of other  companies ( say Apple)?

I found the answer in the following quote

Well, a lazy person can find an easy way to do the job but that easy way may not be the best way!

Easy way will come out in product quality sooner or later!

Compare this to Steve Jobs approach in Apple who prefers to have A team for the products.

“The Macintosh experience taught me that A players like to work only with other A players, which means you can’t indulge B players.” “It’s too easy as a team grows, to put up with a few B players, and they then attract a few more B players, and soon you will even have some C players.”

But Microsoft has been successful. Isn't it? How can a company be successful for so long if its product quality is not the best?

Answer is Business Model.

What is the relation between Product and Business Model in success of company?

Why Nokia lost its way?

While there are countless articles and expert analysis on Nokia's recent under performance, it is always interesting to relook the history not after the events but when the events were happening.

I reread "Alchemy of Growth", a decent book by Mckinsey consultants (published in 2000). Though theory is still relevant but many of the succesful examples  mentioned in the book have lost their way. (It is interesting to reread the so called successful management books after a decade or two of their publishing and see whether the analysis stood test of the time.)

Nokia was at peak of its success then. In the above book a quote by Nokia's then director of marketing, Matt Wisk caught my attention

"We are always looking for new ways to blend technology with today's lifestyles. What Nokia has inspired marks the transition of the phone - used not only for its function as a personal communication tool, but also as a fashion accesory."  .... It goes on explaining that how Nokia turned cellular phones into a fashion accessory by offering easy to use devices in vivid colors such as purple, opal, green, blue, and pewter.

This sums up why Nokia has lost its way. Nokia thought that succes factors in phone were not features or cost but fashion. No wonder later Nokia was out smart on top by Apple and RIM ( though RIM is losing now as well) and on bottom by Asian Manufacturers.

More analysis on why Nokia and other companies in Telecom lost their way and Why future is Telecom ?

Book Synopsis – “Who is that lady?”

Can you click a pretty stranger lady in a mall and find out who she is? This curiosity of finding a mysterious lady gives a Eureka moment to Pratik for a new venture idea. But he has a herculean task to convince his IITian pal Rajat to leave his current well settled job in London and start an internet venture on face search with him. Shrewd acumen and MBA tactics of Pratik convinces Rajat to rediscover his long lost interest in technology. This is just the beginning. They have to arrange funds, convince people, incubate organization, develop the product, advertise the product, engage customers and make the venture profitable. Business fundamentals, logic, superstition and intuition all play their role as the will to make the venture a grand success takes on the young entrepreneurs. Will they be able to do it?

Can girls and ladies of the world be found with this new face search software? As the duo progress in face search beyond flirting, new applications of face search software are discovered like layers of onion. Spontaneously and simultaneously, possible serious applications of face search software emerge in funny, thrilling and serious ways i.e. via College attendance, business meetings, psychological evaluation, anti-terrorism operation, murder mystery investigation, theft control, prostitution prevention, crime control, anti-Naxalite operation and Bollywood etc. Possibilities are endless, as new significant uses of face search keep on popping up miraculously.

In the process, emerges the new scope of visual search beyond face search. Can the personality beyond face be recognized? Can the lady inside the burqa be recognized? Can dresses be recognized? Can places be recognized? Finally where does this visual search stop?

The story is about an idea that is converted into billion dollar business, about a belief that an idea can be implemented and about formulating right strategy for converting an idea into a business. The plot harmoniously weaves around complex business fundamentals, required to set up, run and make a business successful, presented in lucid, easy to understand style. The novel is about implementation, about challenges that can be overcome, about success, about friendship, about passion, and about fun above all!

Amusingly, some interesting management puzzles are also solved as the story moves on such as Why MBAs are not good entrepreneurs? What makes a product successful in the market? Why Indian product companies are not successful globally? Why meetings on Monday mornings don’t give positive outcomes in general? Does Vastu and numerological principle apply to website design?

All in all a hilarious and inspiring story on entrepreneurship and idea possibilities!
